Forza Racing Championship ChinaJoy Invitational Recap

The Forza Racing Championship made its debut in Asia over the weekend with the ForzaRC ChinaJoy Invitational: The Chevrolet Cup. Sixteen qualifiers from China competed on Friday in two groups of 8-player races. The top four players from each group would move on to Saturday’s finals and for a chance to call themselves the inaugural ForzaRC ChinaJoy Invitational champion.

Semi-Finals

Day 1 featured Group A and Group B competing in two races apiece. Race 1 featured the B-Class 2014 Chevrolet Super Sport on Sebring Club and saw some thrilling racing, including a fantastic final lap that saw racer MGC Jrich921 steal the win from TAMA Viper D on the very final turn of the race. The win was a serious blow to Viper D, who was last seen competing in the Forza Racing Championship Season 3 finals at Le Mans under the Gamertag MAN LOVE CARS. Jrich would go on to win the Group A Race 2 as well, piloting the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 around the Le Mans Bugatti circuit, while Viper D had to settle for fourth place.

Over in Group B, both Race 1 and Race 2 were dominated by MGC ChicPizza, a teammate of Jrich but a fierce competitor in his own right. After dusting DueToZoo0 in Race 1, ChicPizza made similar short work of MGC Jamesc999 in Race 2. DueTozoo0 would manage a third place finish in Race 2, enough to get him into Saturday’s races as the only racer at the event not affiliated with a team.

Grand Finals

The ChinaJoy Invitational Grand Finals saw a battle between two teams: MGC and TAMA. The powerhouse MGC team had six entries alone, including Jrich, ChicPizza, and James, along with the likes of MGC EasonChen (who had some admirably scrappy drives in Group A on Day 1) and MGC Hawking13, who finished Day 1 with two third-place finishes. Apart from privateer DueToZoo0, the remaining opposition for Team MGC was Team TAMA, featuring Viper D and TAMA PARAXYLNE.

The first race of Day 2 featured the 2015 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 at Road Atlanta, a tricky combination of power, grip, and undulating terrain that made for some thrilling racing. Based on the performances from Day 1, we expected a battle between favorites Jrich and ChicPizza and that is exactly what we got. At the green light, both Jrich and ChicPizza saw great starts off the line and proceeded to run away from the field, finishing just as they started, with Jrich taking the win and ChicPizza finishing just behind in second.

The second race of the day saw the most powerful car yet – the R-class 2014 Chevrolet #3 Corvette Racing Corvette C7.R – tackling the ups and downs of Sonoma Raceway. As always, every part of a race – from start to final lap – is crucial to success and nowhere was that more evident than in Race 2. After stalling at the line from pole position, Jrich quickly fell to fourth position, giving his rival ChicPizza a comfortable lead. To his credit Jrich fought admirably, clawing his way up the field and eventually settling into second place, but it was too little too late, as ChicPizza held him off to take the Race 2 win. With both Grand Finals races complete, both racers were tied on points, which meant officials had to go to total race times to break the tie, giving ChicPizza the inaugural ChinaJoy Invitational win by a mere 1.4 seconds.

With his win, ChicPizza automatically earns a berth to a future Forza Racing Championship event and we can’t wait to see how he stacks up to the rest of the world. Congratulations go out to all the rest of the ForzaRC competitors as well and we look forward to seeing more ForzaRC action in the future!

RoadRunner Talks Winning Season 3 of the ForzaRC Season 3: The Porsche Cup

“I didn’t really know how to feel or what to think." RoadRunner Talks Winning Season 3 of the ForzaRC

Alie Tacq 7/7/2017

“Going into the waiting room, the walls were cream. There was blue, a lot of blue, and it smelled like champagne. There was a window inside with a curtain across it, and through there was race control. So we were quiet. But that air-con was gorgeous! The best of that weekend. We watched all the cars go into the pits until we got called, one by one.”

Le Mans podium waiting room

Mike Hawthorn, Jacky Ickx, Johnny Herbert, Stefan Johansson, only a select few drivers make it to the podium of The 24 Hours of Le Mans. The history of those three steps and the incredible achievement they represent make standing upon them one of motorsport’s greatest honors. At the Grand Final of The Forza Racing Championship Season 3: The Porsche Cup, AMS RoadRunner, (aka Michael Coyne) earned his place in that roster.

A full-time student of automotive design, RoadRunner was not ranked amongst the favorites coming into the competition; instead, all eyes were upon established winners CAR Laige and CAR Lightning. But over the four races of the final, the Englishman, and newcomer to ForzaRC finals, surpassed all to assert himself at the top of the sport.

The first indication he was a driver to watch came in Race 1 at Spa-Francorchamps. On the final corner of the last lap, Roadrunner threw a move around the outside of Lightning to take second position. This, he explained, was all about reading the road: “As soon as I saw Lightning touch that inside curb, I knew TCS would kick in and I knew that was my opportunity to accelerate out of that corner as fast as possible.”

It was a great pass but it took Race 2, at the Nürburgring in the wet, for the new champion to truly make his claim to the title. He explained that, in those treacherous conditions, it was a matter of stringing the corners together. “Knowing how deadly the rain can be, and with Lightning in second, I knew I had to keep up the consistency. Somehow I managed it and brought home the win.”

Twice RoadRunner had the better of Lightning. His other rival, Laige, suffered bad luck in Race 2, but was not yet beaten. Starting on pole at a blessedly dry Silverstone, Roarrunner was immediately racing from his mirrors. “When Laige got through to second after just a few corners, I knew I had to treat it like Race 2. It was another matter of consistency,” he said.

At the mid-race point, Laige was crawling all over the rear bumper of RoadRunner, finally finding the space to sneak his nose up the inside as the two racers headed toward the Start/Finish straight. “I have to say,” RoadRunner said, “that overtake by Laige has to be one of the best overtakes I’ve ever seen; props to him on that one.”

For the fourth race, Roadrunner felt completely prepared. “I had had plenty of practice,” he said. “I knew how to drive the car, where to push it where not to push. So I knew I had a chance to win.” With Laige and RoadRunner heading into the final race just one championship point apart, it would all come down to position on the asphalt. And where better to decide the championship than around the track that extended just beyond the Forza Racing Championship studio walls, the Circuit de la Sarthe?

As it turned out, this race was over almost as soon as it had begun. After a few turns Laige tipped the rear of RoadRunner’s car, sending the Champion-to-be pirouetting across the track. “He touched the sweet spot,” RoadRunner remembered. “But Laige saw he had spun me and waited up. I knew he was going to get a penalty so it was just a matter of keeping in front of Laige, or try to stick with him if he got ahead.” Ultimately third place was enough for RoadRunner to take the championship.

“I was a little bit speechless, I didn’t know what to feel because I didn’t have any expectations going in. If I had [just] made the Grand Final I would have been happy. But to actually win it, I didn’t really know how to feel or what to think.” A few minutes later and RoadRunner, Laige and Lightning -- first, second and third finishers respectively -- alongside all their teammates, were called out from the waiting room to the podium at The 24 Hours of Le Mans.

RoadRunner laughed as he remembered the ceremony: “Unbeknownst to me everyone had made a pact with the champagne. They all went for me! Someone got a perfect shot right in my eye. That really stings! It made the bottle really slippery, but I finally got mine open and sprayed them all. I don’t know if I hit or not though, I was half blind by that point!”

RoadRunner Post Champagne Shower

Since then,” he said, “lots of people have sent me messages congratulating me. I’m not used to that kind of stuff! It’s just been different. I always try to help people with tunes and whatever and me and my team try and be community-oriented and do as many events as possible, so its nice to get messages from the people I’ve met over the years.”

Alongside his numerous trophies and $20,000 prize money, another surprise was waiting for RoadRunner when he got home. As co-founder of Alien Motorsport, AMS, RoadRunner was pleased to get the chance to expand the team. “We got the chance to merge with another team, EMR, so that’s been great. Over the next few months we’ll be working to develop all the drivers for our team.”

We’re all about working together and having fun,” he said. “I’ve always gone into Forza to race and to have fun. At the ForzaRC I was there for the experience, I had no expectations. And that’s how I go into all the events I enter. I want to enjoy the experience while I’m there and not put too much pressure on myself.”

It sounds like RoadRunner more than achieved this goal. “I watched the start of the 24 Hours of the Le Mans, that was the first time I heard the cars. The vibrations of them zooming by. that GT Porsche, that RSR is absolutely amazing. You can hear it all the way from the first chicane to Tertre Rogue and then its just gone. But you can still hear it all the way down the straight, just slightly.”

ForzaRC Season 3: The Porsche Cup Race Results from Le Mans

Race Results from Le Mans!

The final results are in from the Forza Racing Championship Season 3: The Porsche Cup. It was a series that pushed drivers all the way to their ragged limit. At the Grand Finals 12 of the most elite Forza racers in the world pushed their way through day and night for victory alongside the real-life 24 Hours of Le Mans.

ForzaRC Season 3 Finals Venue

The new Champion Michael Coyne (aka AMS RoadRunner) walked away with some healthy additions to his trophy cabinet, the Season 3 title and $20,000. As a newcomer to the ForzaRC finals his victory was made all the more impressive by the upset it brought to the established pecking order, especially in a field dominated by experienced competition drivers.

Not least amongst these favorites were CAR Laige, who finished second, and CAR Lightning, third; two racers who, up until Season 3, had won every major event in the history of the ForzaRC. In April, Lightning won the New York Invitational, while Laige took top honors in both Season One and Season Two.

ForzaRC Le Mans Finals Game Play

RoadRunner’s Alien Motorsport racing team, AMS, now join an elite group of ForzaRC winners. Interestingly, despite Liage himself having won twice, no team has two ForzaRC full season champions to its name. Laige won the first for Virtual Drivers by TX3 and the second for his current team, eSPORTS+CARS.

RoadRunner also joins the small group of drivers who have secured a race win at the ForzaRC Finals. Alongside CAR Laige and CAR Lightning, only BAM ASIX13 and CAR Bbb0x have brought home a victory at this level; a testament to the quality of the few drivers at the very, very top of this eSport.

A huge congratulations is in order for all the drivers who took part in The Forza Racing Championship Season 3: The Porsche Cup. For more information about upcoming events, ForzaRC teams and ForzaRC players head over to ForzaRacingChampionship.com and be sure to follow @ForzaRC on Twitter.
